BikeScout on a Wahoo ELEMNT

Push routes to the ELEMNT — without the Wahoo cloud

The official path for getting a route onto an ELEMNT is phone → Wahoo cloud → device Wi-Fi. BikeScout sends it straight over Bluetooth: live progress fills the Send button, and the unit starts navigating when it lands. Cancel mid-transfer and everything is left clean.

• Your stops survive: water, food, café and viewpoint markers arrive with the route and show on the ELEMNT. Wahoo's own sync strips them — on a 755-route test device, every single synced stop was gone.
• Big routes get a faster connection for the transfer, and a mid-transfer stall recovers on its own.
• The Routes list pins what the unit is carrying with an On ELEMNT badge — earned by a completed push or the unit's own report, never by merely opening a route.

Plan and edit routes on the phone

Neither Wahoo app has a route builder. BikeScout does: tap waypoints on the map, pick road, gravel or trekking, preview distance and ascent, save. Import GPX and FIT files, Komoot courses already on the unit, or turn any past ride back into a route.

• Scrubbable, grade-shaded elevation profile with a synced map cursor.
• Reroute around real places: search OSM POIs near any point of the route, then splice the pick in as a via-point or a detour-and-rejoin — the delta measured against the remaining route, no GPS fix required.
• Wind arrows along the path once a forecast is loaded.

Get rides off the ELEMNT, onto your phone, into Strava

The current Wahoo app removed .fit export and USB file access. BikeScout lists every completed ride still on the head unit next to the ones already on the phone — one date-ordered list, not a sync screen — and pulls them over Bluetooth with per-ride progress and retry. Opt in, and pulled rides upload themselves to Strava, oldest first, surviving rate limits, dead spots and app restarts.

Weather, rules and reminders on the ELEMNT screen

The ELEMNT shows no weather. BikeScout projects the forecast along your route by ETA — the weather where and when you'll actually be there — and pushes anticipatory alerts to the device: rain onset, building headwind, temperature drops, gusts. A rule engine adds your own triggers: hydration on an interval (suppressed on steep descents), fueling, HR-zone warnings, and a sunscreen reminder that models UV, Fitzpatrick skin type and accumulated time in the sun.

Live tracking without the vendor cloud

Flip one switch and friends watch your dot at bikescout.app/r/… — no app, no login on their side. The link carries your planned route, shows PAUSED instead of a lying LIVE badge when you stop, expires on its own, and when sharing breaks mid-ride, the ELEMNT itself tells you why: no connection, sign-in expired, or server error.

Fair to the official app

A Bluetooth peripheral takes one phone at a time. When you want the Wahoo app back, "Disconnect everything" — on the Devices screen and on the lock-screen notification — releases the unit, stops auto-reconnect, and stays out of the way until you return.
